power saving & less fan noise

2008-02-12 17:19:35
Posted by: malc from the UK

please can someone tell me if a cpu such as this one can be under-clocked ?

just so that the computer can be run with lower fan rpm and therefore less noise ?

thanks

Response: I think they cannot be underclocked, but I may be mistaken. Please post the question in the forum.

Yes they can be underclocked. With mine the multiplier switches between 6 and 8x depending on how much load the system is under so it basically underlocks to 2Ghz when you're not doing much.

But if you want, yes you can underclock it more than that by lowering the FSB and it'll work fine. You probably won’t see much benefit though because this is a very efficient CPU. I think mine uses about 5watts when idle. If you’re worried about noise just buy a better heatsink, the one I use is about 4 times bigger than the stock one.

All Core2/CoreQuad CPU's can be underclocked. Reducing the multiplyer is a valid method. Reducing the FSB is the other.
