Hot running chips, even with good cooling

Even with an 80MM cooler, this thing ran hot. Originaly had a 1GHZ Tbird and I upgraded to this rarity.

Runs hot!

Yes I also have one of these and so far it's hitting 60 degrees for some odd reason.

Maybe it's just the heatsink and fan not being suitable but just incase, please be careful when handling this processor after shutting down. You may burn your fingers.

I burnt two of them

One of them ran from 2001 to summer 2004, then it burnt itself. The other one was just burnt yesterday. It can be very hot. If you want it to last long, better check the dust on the fan every month, especially when the computer starts to act like a 90 year old.

Further...

Just incase this burns out in the existing PC it's in, I have kept back a 1GHz AMD (also 462skt) just incase.

I would advise anyone using this chip to also do similar and keep a slower (and thus cheaper) Skt 462 processor just incase. Chip works like a dream but is just very hot. I hear this is a fault with the AMD design but according to the specs on this page, it should run upto approx 90 degrees.

Then just cool it well this cpu is an award winner!!!
A good sink and an 2700 rpm fan will bring it under 50 degrees. if not check yout airflow!

good amd cooler

iv got an 8cm by 6cm heatsink and a 9 propeller coolermaster fan going at 6000-Rpm cooler on my 1300 AMD Athlon, it keeps the temperature below 55 degreese in a chassis with poor airflow, but with upgraded airflow with a 120mm fan in the back it keeps it below 40 degrees, i was amzed after i thought you needed better airflow, this comp is just one of the fer im using, iv got a new amd phenom processor and board temperature on 45 degrees, well impressed, considering that the phenom processor is 4x that one core Doubled at 3.0Ghz quad core. if i was you upgrade, it cost me a minimum of £450/$900

regards Jamie

It used to run at 65 degrees until I swapped to larger case and couple 120mm fans front & rear, brought it down to 45.

I have the 1.7v version got it from a friend and i currently cannot find a board for it ebay may have a gem dont know. Btw thunderbirds were always known for their space heater design. The barton cores were popular since they didnt produce quite as much heat. Im an amd fan and outta all the pc's i have right now the only amd is my laptop (turion x2). My desktop is a c2d e6600 and the turion seems alot faster to me.

toasty

it's a hot one alright. i'm using some ancient cooler, probably as old as the chip itself, but with a copper shim (mandatory for ANY Socket A part) and Kryonaut. it sits around 50 C. works for me.

not easy to find a working PSU that can power one of these either.
